There are many titles that you can give a friend. You can have your grade school friends, your high school friends and the friendships that don't make it very long. When I look back on all the friendships that I have had, I wouldn't change them for the world. Not all of them were the healthiest but most of them are the reason I am where I am at today.
My grade school friends are my best friends. They have been there for me since the very beginning. They are the ones that I have experienced everything with the past 15 years and they know me like they know themselves. There are no secrets between us, and even though we don't see each other everyday due to college, work, and family it doesn't matter how long it has been since we last saw each other to be able to pick up where we left off. It has been about 5 1/2 years since I stopped going to school with my grade school friends, the group of five of them are the ones I can still call and talk to about anything.
You need to be able to find friends who will always be there for you through your highest and lowest points in life. That is where my elementary school friends fit in. They personally might not be able to physically be with me at all times when I'm sad or happy, but knowing that I am on their mind at some point in their week makes me happy to know I have them.
Not all friendships are easy, especially the ones you make in high school and college. For me, not knowing anyone coming into high school, it was hard making new friends that would stay with me forever. It wasn't until the end of my sophomore year, where I realized I needed to stop holding back and just venture out and find those life-long friends. Which fortunately I was able to branch out and meet some of the best of friends I could ever ask for, and honestly those true friendships are the ones that will stay with me. Even though I wasn't the most popular in high school, nor did I have a ton of friends, I enjoyed my last two years of high school so much more than my first two since I was able to branch myself out and allow myself to make those lifelong friendships.
The definition of a friend, according to Dictionary.com, is, "a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations." The definition of a friend, according to myself, is a person who will always be there for you, no matter the distance, no matter when you met, and will always be a phone call or visit away. You don't have to always go out and party with them, but you don't have to stay inside with them either. You can do whatever you want, and the truest friend will want to do anything with you. Sometimes its hard being a friend since you can't read someones mind. It is hard to tell emotion even when its one of the oldest friends you've had.
Always,
